Lady and her puppies
A gratifying experience for Marty Macdonald, who turned from adopter to volunteer!
I had wanted to adopt a rescue dog for a long time and wanted to make sure I was the best possible fit for a dog so applied to foster through NDR first. Try to imagine my reaction when Dianne Cartmell of NDR called and said she had a really big ask. Would I be willing to take in a pregnant dog and foster her and her puppies until they were ready for adoption, a minimum 2 month commitment!? I had never fostered before and I was terrified at the idea of being midwife for the births, but Dianne offered her full support and I knew this mom-to-be needed me so I jumped in. My friends and family thought I was a little crazy (guilty, lol) and a lot brave (more like shaking in my boots!) but I was all in. When I saw a picture of beautiful and sad little Lady my heart was hers. And even more so when I met her. The time came and Lady had 6 beautiful healthy puppies. When the first puppy was born, Danielle Ranch and Dianne rushed over to help. Phew! Dianne remained my guide and advisor throughout the whole fostering experience. The puppies were sweet, loving, playful and endlessly entertaining, and Lady was a great mom. The whole fostering experience was exhilarating, thrilling, exhausting at times, heartwarming and gratifying. The puppies were adopted by 6 wonderful and loving families. Lady adopted me. She is sweet, playful, friendly and loving and I'm forever grateful that she chose me. My heart is full.
ps: I love Niagara Dog Rescue's work so much I am now a volunteer.
