APPLYING FOR FOSTER

We require fosters in the Niagara Region to west GTA. Each additional foster home allows us to save a life, giving one more dog the time it needs to find a loving forever home.

For families considering adoption but not yet sure, fostering provides an opportunity to try out the new addition to the family before making a long-term commitment.

There are no costs associated to fostering besides perhaps some kibble if we are unable to get you some donated food (location) No vetting is required all dogs come fully vetted.

You expectation is to give them a quiet space to hang out while they wait for their homes. Provide photos and videos when possible to help with online promotion to help them find their perfect homes!

Niagara Dog Rescue reserves the right to reject any application and reserves the sole right in determining the best placement for our dogs.

Special needs dogs have behavioural issues that may interfere with their integration into a new home once adopted. Some of the problem behaviours may include;

• Separation Anxiety
• Food Aggression
• Dog Selectivity / Dog Aggression
• Resource Guarding
• Shyness / Nervousness
• Fear of strangers
• Nipping / Mouthing

A certified canine behaviourist will assess the dogs behavior prior to placement in a foster home. They will also develop a behavioral plan based on the individual dogs needs for the foster family to closely follow in order to resolve the problem behavior.

Requirements for a special needs foster are;

• Patience
• Experience with dog handling (exposure to any of the above listed behaviours is an asset)
• Knowledge of basic obedience training
• Ability to follow detailed instructions
• Time to implement the behavioural plan
• Ability to provide a structured and consistent environment

The behavioural issue exhibited and the available background information on the foster dog will determine the best suited foster environment. A home without other animals or children is not required although there is currently a shortage of special needs fosters without animals or young children in the home.
